Mr Gerhard Venter Psychologist

Gerhard is an approachable and compassionate Clinical Psychologist who has been practising Psychology for almost 30 years. He works with adults aged 18 years and older and provides assessment for adult ADHD. Originally from South Africa, he spent 5 years in New Zealand and the past 14 years in Australia. He has been happily married for over 30 years to his wife Ty and they are the proud parents of 2 adult sons. Gerhard has much professional, life and relationship experience and understands the stress modern life places on individuals, relationships, parenting and work. Gerhard has an engaging and informal manner yet is very professional in his approach. He draws from several evidence-based therapies and regularly engages in professional development to ensure his practice remains current. He has worked in private practice for many years and previously managed acute and community mental health services across Metro North. His work in acute mental health has given him a high level of knowledge and experience in risk assessment, crisis management and navigating the public mental health system. Previous experience includes serving in the military for 7 years as a Clinical Psychologist and providing consultation services for human relations to the petro-chemical industry. Whereas Gerhard’s post-graduate training at a leading South African University had a strong systemic and strategic therapy focus, he has incorporated cognitive therapies (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and trauma-informed therapy (EMDR) during his professional career. He is trained in Ericksonian Strategic Therapy and Hypnotherapy as well as Ego State Therapy and is a member of the International Society of Clinical Hypnosis. His therapeutic approach incorporates different theoretical models with a growing interest in somatic experiencing and utilising hypnosis to facilitate psychological integration. Gerhard is also knowledgeable in the assessment and management of adult ADHD and has many years of experience in this area. Gerhard is a well-respected amongst his peers for his manner, professionalism, knowledge and commitment to supporting others towards better mental health.
