Overarching philosophy to therapy: My therapeutic approach involves a combination of all of the modalities outlined below. The underpinning nature of my work comes from an existential perspective where the nature of one’s experience and meaning are examined. Essentially we try to make sense of our surroundings, trying to understand ourselves, other people, and their place in the world. This view of ourselves is created by the influences of time, place, culture, society and family. These influences and experiences help in shaping the character and personalities of ourselves as individuals but also our place in this world. Each theory of psychology from psycho-analytic, cognitive behavioural through to narrative assist us in understanding ourselves and how and why we think and feel.
I work in a way that draws upon psycho-dynamic, humanistic, cognitive, emotion-focused, existential and Buddhist theories to allow the client to explore their world in more detail; to understand how they view themselves and to see themselves more clearly so that they can make informed choices on how best to deal with situations and find more appropriate ways of living in a more integrated way. The work is done in a collaborative way between myself and the client and I use the relationship to explore the client’s own sense of self and how they relate to others and the world.
